Cascade Bicycle Club is seeking to hire a Bicycle Mechanic and Assembler. The Bicycle Mechanic and Assembler will serve this dynamic, well-established, and respected organization by demonstrating a passion for bicycling and for growing the influence and impact in pursuing the organization’s mission.

Cascade Bicycle Club, the nation's largest statewide bicycle nonprofit, is 10,000-members, 54-years old, and 39-staff strong, serving bike riders of all ages and abilities throughout the state of Washington. We teach the joys of bicycling, advocate for safe places to ride, and produce community rides and events. Our signature programs include the Seattle to Portland ride, the Pedaling Relief Project, advocacy for connected trail networks and on-street bike networks in Seattle and across the Puget Sound Region, Your Streets Your Say, Free Group Rides, Adult Classes, Let's Go, and the Major Taylor Project.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

Cascade’s education efforts encourage people to become lifelong riders by reaching them at all stages of life. Our education programming aims to be inclusive of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, and reaches diverse communities throughout the state. 

We strive to facilitate opportunities for students to become participants in communities of learning that foster empowerment and joy, where the bicycle is a tool for transformation. We commit to a spirit of continuous improvement in both our teaching practice and program development. We believe in the fundamental concept of inclusion and commit to serving all students well by making decisions that prioritize equitable access and support community goals.

The Education Department consists of three distinct teams: 

  • Programs Team 
    • A team of 3 Program Managers, 2-3 Coordinators, and up to 15 part-time employees for two programs: Let’s Go, and Major Taylor Project. 
    • Funding through state grants, fee-for-service contracts, and earned revenue through event registration
    • Works within 6 school districts in the Puget Sound Region and serves audiences from 5 to 80+ years old
  • Statewide Team
    • A team of 3 Program Officers, 2 Partnership Managers, and 1 Finance Manager, 
    • Grows programming based on Let’s Go and Major Taylor Project across the state via passthrough funding from WSDOT
    • This work is funded via contract with WSDOT for 15 years 
  • Fleet & Logistics Team
    • A team of one Fleet Manager, two Coordinators, plus this position.
    • Responsible for Procuring bicycle and trailer fleets for Programs Team and Statewide partners 
    • Manages in-house fleet of 14 towing trailers, 4 towing vehicles, and 700+ bikes (including adaptive bikes) 

The Bicycle Mechanic and Assembler will support Cascade in the acquisition, assembly, maintenance and distribution of bicycle and trailer fleets for the Program Team and Statewide Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fleet Maintenance and Assembly:
    • Perform fleet maintenance as required by internal CBC programs.
    • Assemble bikes for the expansion of CBC education programs.
    • Perform offsite triage and maintenance for bike fleets in the field.
    • Deliver bicycles and supplies to schools and partner organizations across Washington.
    • Maintain bike inventory and maintenance documentation for bicycles, trailers, and vehicles
    • Assist with maintenance of bike storage areas as well as Cascade's Fix-it Garage bicycle repair shop and teaching space

Skills and Competencies

  • At least 1 year bike shop experience.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle with a trailer or willingness to learn.
  • Commitment to racial and educational equity.

Qualifications 

  • Professional Bicycle maintenance experience.
  • Valid WA Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 30 days, and a willingness to learn to operate cargo vehicles with towing trailers.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs in the form of moving bicycles to/from storage or on/off trucks and trailers.

Job Details 

This position is part-time, hourly, non-exempt, temporary/seasonal position and will take place in-person. The Bicycle Mechanic and Assembler is a very hands-on position, with a mix of bicycle repair work, and assembly duties. This position will routinely work 25 hours per week. This position will include occasional deliveries of bike fleets across the state. These deliveries will involve long work hours and/or overnight travel.

Commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, the salary range starts at $22 to $30 per hour, along with a competitive benefits package.

Program Manager - Major Taylor Project (King County Region)

What We Need

Cascade Bicycle Club is seeking a bicycling visionary who recognizes the impact a strong bicycling community can have for youth of color to serve as the next Program Manager - Major Taylor Project (King County Region). The Major Taylor Project (MTP) Manager is a community galvanizer, youth advocate, and organizational leader. The MTP Manager develops and fulfills the vision for the program while inspiring the community to contribute to its success. The MTP Manager is also an organized and detail-oriented program manager who creates and refines success measures, personnel and volunteer training, and safety protocols.

The Major Taylor Project Manager reports to the Education Director and is a member of the Education Department. They are responsible for supervising and guiding MTP staff and volunteers. This position manages project operations and activities designed for middle and high school students at MTP sites throughout the region. The MTP Manager will also lead in curriculum development, site development, help promote MTP clubs, and lead in engaging community partners to advance the program.

The MTP Manager will manage community sites and schools throughout the region and will manage a team of full-time and part-time staff. The Major Taylor Project Manager will have an established track record of building relationships in communities of color and high-need communities in general, balancing multiple projects and meeting desired outcomes. Due to the large-scale nature of Cascade event rides and their importance to the fiscal well-being of Cascade, staff members are required to work several events a year, a mix of mandatory all-hands events and events chosen by employees.

MTP Program Personnel
MTP works in school districts across two “regions”, King County and Pierce County. Both regions have the following support personnel structure:
● Program Managers

  • Full time role, primarily office-based
  • Responsible for yearly planning, program goals and quality assurance, and personnel and budget management

● Program Coordinator(s)

  • Full or part-time role, depending on need
  • Responsible for day-to-day coordination, supply stewardship, and site coordination

● Ride Leaders

  • Part-time/seasonal direct service role
  • Meet weekly on-site with students
  • Plan weekly rides, engagement activities, and recruit students

● Volunteers

  • Support ride leaders by organizing club supplies and ensuring students are supported safely on rides

What You'll Bring

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project Management
    • Manage operations for all MTP sites in King Co., ensuring consistent procedures, programming, student learning, and fleet operations/use
    • Respond to the diverse needs of a portfolio of schools across multiple districts by creating and improving differentiated programming and curriculum
    • Collaborate with the Fleet & Logistics staff to maintain organized and safe bicycle maintenance and delivery procedures and practices, including driving bicycle fleets to club locations.
    • Oversee volunteer recruitment, training, management and engagement
    • Evaluate and administer program data collection methods to support data-driven decision-making and program growth
  • Administration and Team Leadership
    • Support, mentor, supervise and develop MTP coordinators (1-2 full-time staff) and MTP Ride Leaders (3-6. part-time, direct service staff)
    • Coordinate, train, and manage hiring, scheduling, contracting, and evaluating of MTP personnel
    • Work with the Education Director to develop and track program budgets
    • Report cyclical program outcomes within Cascade Bicycle Club and to outside funders
    • Collaborate with the Statewide team for program expansion via statewide partnerships
  • Event Planning
    • Organize events and activities in accordance with the mission and goals of the Major Taylor Project
    • Facilitate and direct the MTP team in the planning, staffing, promotion, and execution of MTP rides, events and activities including but not limited to: cyclocross races, Bike Swap, Cascade Major Rides with MTP student riders, and advocacy opportunities
    • Ensure that event and activity goals are met in areas including but not limited to student learning outcomes, safety, and team member performance
  • Strategic Partnerships and Community Building
    • Create and sustain relationships with stakeholders including school district staff, community partners, and volunteers
    • Oversee outreach efforts at community and school sites to ensure student engagement in programming
    • Develop and manage strategic MTP partnerships to enhance project outcomes, sustainability and impact
  • Fundraising Support and Communication of Purpose
    • Collaborate with the Communications and Technology Departments to shape and help communicate the MTP vision, story, and purpose
    • Represent MTP to staff, volunteers, members, agencies, partners, community organizations, and the public
    • Collaborate with the Education Director and the Development Department in pursuing sustainable and aligned fiscal support/s

Qualifications

  • Prior people management and/or people development experience
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to plan ahead, meet deadlines and goals, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to give and receive feedback, with a desire for personal growth and development
  • Experience working with youth in educational settings, especially between ages of 11 and 17
  • Proficiency in Google/Microsoft Suite, including presentations, sheets, docs, etc.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs in the form of moving 10-50 bicycles to/from storage or on/off trucks and trailers frequently
  • Bike maintenance experience or the willingness to learn (preferred)
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors occasionally during all seasons
  • Valid WA Driver's  License or the ability to obtain one and the ability to travel within WA State (majority of travel for this position is within King County)
  • Willingness to drive a towing vehicle and cargo trailer

Job Details

This position is full-time exempt and remote-hybrid eligible. Generally, work can be done off-site, provided there is no loss to team collaboration, the needs of the organization, and the essential functions of the position. However, residence in Washington state and the ability to come into the office one to three days a month are required. Some weekend and evening work are required, up to roughly 16 weekends per year. Typical weekly hours for this position are 40.

Commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, the salary range starts at $64,022 with a midpoint of $76,827, along with a competitive benefits package. New hires typically start between minimum and midpoint.

Tacoma MTP Ride Leader(s)

What We Need

Cascade Bicycle Club is looking for self-motivated cyclists with a passion for youth development and building community through equity and inclusion. Major Taylor Project (MTP) Ride Leaders bring knowledge, skills, and empowerment f cycling to Black and diverse youth between the ages of 12 and 18. MTP Ride Leaders plan and lead group bicycle rides for young people, twice a week, for up to 10 weeks per season; they commit to direct-service in middle and high schools for after-school enrichment; they will plan and pre-ride routes as well as lead small group rides for middle and high school youth in the greater Tacoma area.

Ride Leaders will be assigned at least one club to coordinate and lead, with an open option for more. MTP club riders provide youth with the opportunity to explore their communities, build relationships with fellow riders, continuously challenge themselves, and have fun. This is a great opportunity for an individual with a passion for cycling, youth development, and dedication to their community, or a youth advocate, teacher, or counselor with an interest in cycling.

Hirees for this position report directly to Major Taylor Project Managers and are critical team members of the Education Department at Cascade Bicycle Club.

The Major Taylor Project (MTP) is a seasonal youth development program hosted within the Education Department at Cascade Bicycle Club. MTP is especially focused on introducing youth from diverse communities to recreational and transportation cycling and creating an inclusive culture of bicycling. MTP uses the bicycle to help students expand their worldview and encourages them to explore the agency they have to change themselves and their communities. Programming follows the academic year with Fall, Winter, and Spring activities.

The Major Taylor Project intentionally focuses on serving Black an Indigenous youth of color. MTP operates in diverse communities in order to increase access to bicycling and community engagement. Ride Leaders work directly with youth, community organizations, and schools. MTP Ride Leader applicants should be socially sensitive and have the ability to lead conversations relating to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion. Ride Leaders are responsible for creating a safe and empowering environment for all participants in the program. Ride Leader applicants should have experience working with youth, are passionate about youth, and are excited to share the joy of bicycling!

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement weekly rides, program activities, and logistics
  • Teach bicycle skills and lead supplemental lessons/activities
  • Visual documentation of club operations (e.g. weekly photos and videos of club activities for the MTP Instagram account)

  • Conduct outreach and recruitment activities
  • Build a supportive MTP community through facilitation of team building activities and growth-mindset engagement
  • Serve as the site specific point-of-contact, bridging communication between school administration, parents, students, and Cascade
  • Record and maintain all relevant administrative data for site programming including: attendance records, volunteer records, completed rides, etc.

Job Details

This position is Part-time, Non-Exempt position. This position is completely field-work based, working at various schools and community centers in Pierce County. Team members may be assigned to work a maximum of 30 hrs/wk during club seasons. Salary for this position ranges from $22-$26/hour, depending on experience.

Season and Hours of Clubs:

  • Ride Leader hours vary, with traditional hours of operation ranging between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
    • Club rides run 2-3 hours per club day
    • Clubs operate one day per week
  • Billable Hours
    • The average club should provide at least 4hrs/wk of work

      • 1.5 hours of planning
      • 30 minutes of administrative work
      • 2 hours of club operations including set-up and clean-up
    • Ride Leaders are expected to scout and pre-ride routes, billing for these hours
  • Programming Seasons align with the academic year, with some weekend and summer event opportunities
  • Ride Leaders are expected to attend all of their scheduled clubs for a complete season
    • Seasons are between 8 and 10 weeks, depending on the site
    • Ride Leaders can work up to 3 clubs in a season, when available
    • Non-health related absences and work conflicts should be communicated at least a week in advance
